The Power of Community_How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

The Power of Community_How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It…

Housing + Transportation Affordability Index

Housing + Transportation Affordability Index

Living in the suburbs often looks like the cheaper housing option—until you factor in the cost of transportation, that is. The Center for Neighborhood Technology has an amazing online tool that maps 161,000 American neighborhoods and adds the transportation costs to the housing costs in a given place so you can see how affordable (or not) the far-flung exurbs really are. In the lefthand map above, the yellow areas show where housing is less than 30 percent of average income and…

Oil Standard
Michael Mandiberg

Oil Standard

Oil Standard is a web browser plug-in that converts all prices from U.S. Dollars into the equivalent value in barrels of crude oil.  When you load a web page, the script seamlessly inserts converted prices into the page. As the cost of oil fluctuates on the commodities exchange, prices rise and fall in real-time. Oil Standard is a work by Michael Mandiberg a Brooklyn based artist, programmer, designer, educator, and bicyclist.

Real Costs
Michael Mandiberg

Real Costs

Real Costs is a Firefox plug-in that inserts emissions data into travel related e-commerce websites. The first version adds CO2 emissions information to airfare websites such as Orbitz.com, United.com, Delta.com, etc. Following versions will work with car directions, car rental, and shipping websites. Think of it like the nutritional information labeling on the back of food... except for emissions. How Real Costs Works: Experience the project by installing the Real Costs plug-in into your Firefox application. Currently, this plug-in pulls each flight…

Cascade
Atelier Van Lieshout

Cascade

The eight-metre tall sculpture is made of polyester, a material that can almost be regarded as the signature of Atelier Van Lieshout. Eighteen stacked oil drums, which appear to descend from the sky like a waterfall, combine to form a monumental column. From the life-size drums drips a syrupy mass in which one can make out the shapes of a score of human figures. They are anonymous beings, many of them in dramatic poses. One of them climbs upwards.…

Los Angeles without Traffic

This is my most recent school project.  I thought it would be cool to show what life would look like without any traffic. This is going to be an ongoing project.  Taken from Tom Baker Website
